Project Overview
Sound of the Netherlands is a graduation project sponsored and initiated by Jora Vision, aiming to explore the use of interactive media within a large-capacity indoor cultural attraction. Centered on the theme “Sound of the Netherlands,” the project integrates desk research, user studies, and spatial modeling to build the storyline and intuitive interaction concepts. The design was evaluated through 3D walkthrough videos, VR experiences, and interactive prototypes, providing insights for further refinement and future implementation.

From Insight to Design Goal:



Experience Areas

Area 1 — Sounds from Nature: Interactive Immersive Environment
Area 1 presents an interactive ride through iconic Dutch natural landscapes, including Tulip Fields, Seaside, Windmills, Pastures, and Giethoorn. Visitors use simple hand gestures—captured by Kinect or Leap Motion—to influence the projected content at four interactive stops, each announced by an audio guide. The ride lasts 15 minutes and accommodates 36 visitors at a time, enhanced by thematic sensor lights such as flower-shaped luminaires that respond as the vehicle passes.

Area 2 — City’s Sound: Tram-Themed Experience
Inspired by the everyday rhythms of Dutch urban life, this zone recreates the experience of riding a tram. Visitors encounter characteristic city sounds while moving through an environment themed around public transport and metropolitan culture.

Area 3 — Sound Jockey: Interactive Projection Experience
In this playful, participatory space, visitors become “Sound Jockeys,” manipulating projected visuals and sound elements through intuitive gestures. Their actions remix audio-visual elements in real time, creating a collaborative and expressive sonic experience.





Area 1:Sounds from Nature
Visitors can enjoy the interactive ride experience. The experience of this area is mainly around the natural view and sounds of the Netherlands in the suburbs. 





Attraction Layout
The screens mainly display the scenery and sounds of the Dutch nature and countryside and divided into four themes: Seaside, Windmills, Pastures and Giethoorn.





The interaction design is utilizing physical affordance (body reflector) with audio assistant as the tool of constructing intuitive interaction. Visitors can interact with the show content on the digital screen by the gesture. 



Area 2:City’s Sound
Here visitors can enjoy the view from Netherlands city and experience the immersive sound created by the directional speakers. Through the "window", visitors can watch 3 video stories which present the life or interesting moment in the Netherlands, and visitors can interact with video content.


Interaction
There are 20 screens in total in this area, every two visits can share one screen. The video content is not just showing visitors the cultural-related knowledge of the Netherlands but also acts as the narrative trigger to enable the interactivity.


Attraction Layout 


Area 3:Sound Jockey


The electronic music culture of the Netherlands is deeply rooted in everyday life, and the country is home to many world-renowned DJs. As part of the cultural attraction “Sound of the Netherlands,” this interactive sound plaza is designed around the theme of Dutch electronic music, inviting visitors to create music together. In this immersive environment, visitors can step into the role of a DJ, composing their own beats, or simply enjoy the shared musical experience with those around them.


Interactive Floor Projection:
By using Radar Detection and Projection to create interactive floor experience. The radar system can recognize if the visitors step into the round, which helps to enable the interactivity. 




Audio visual:The melody created by the visitors are synchronized into the system and will be visualized; The visualized sound is rendered and present as different patent (see figure) on the screen on walls.
